What indoors can and cannot do
Indoors gives you stable temperatures, no wind, no frost, and no pests arriving from a neighbouring garden. What it does not give you is light. A room that feels bright to your eyes may deliver almost no direct sun, and that single limitation decides what is worth attempting.
Understanding indoor light
Light falls away sharply with distance from the glass — a plant on the sill and the same plant a metre back are in different worlds. Most herbs need around eight hours of direct light to do well indoors, which few windows supply in winter. A south-facing sill is the best natural position in the northern hemisphere; anything less usually needs a grow light rather than optimism.
What genuinely works
Microgreens are the standout: they are harvested young, tolerate low light, and finish in one to three weeks. Pea shoots and sunflower shoots behave similarly. Chives, mint, parsley, and green onions manage on a bright sill. Lettuce works if you accept looser, slower growth.
What usually disappoints
Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and rosemary are the recurring indoor failures. They are not impossible under strong supplementary lighting, but on a windowsill they stretch, stay pale, and rarely fruit. Choosing a crop matched to the light you actually have is far more effective than trying to compensate later.
Practical setup
Use pots with real drainage and a saucer you can empty rather than one the pot sits in. Turn plants regularly or they lean. Watch for fungus gnats, which are the indoor signal that mix is staying wet too long. Heat sources and cold glass both stress plants, so keep foliage off the window on freezing nights.
